Lead in paint

It used to be quite common for lead to be used in paint. People didn't seem to know that it was bad for you back in them there days. One theory is that Vincent van Gogh's periods of madness were a result of him injesting lead when he licked his brushes to maintain a good point on them.
I suppose that is possible, because lead is cumulative, in that it builds up in your body and never gets flushed out, and it is poisonous. So over a life time, if you injest a lot of lead, it will have an adverse effect on you. It will eventually kill you, but before that it will probably make you go mad and paint loads of crazy paintings which no-one will want to buy until after you are dead.
Which isn't a great career move.
