Roman Roads

When I was at school, for some reason they seemed to think it was a really important life skill for us to know how the Romans built roads. So one day they told us all about it. A week later we had a test on it. One of the questions was, draw a cross section of a Roman road.
If you had been at the class and paying attention, you would have drawn something like this.

But there was one guy who was off sick that day. So he drew this.

Now, you might laugh at that. But that was really showing initiative. He hadn't been at the class, but instead of saying he didn't know, he came up with the best answer he could think of.
